/01 Cutting an image into a grid of tiles
Split an image into an even grid and download every tile at once. The standard way to build an Instagram grid mural, cut a sprite sheet into frames, or divide a large graphic into printable sections.
Choose the number of rows and columns and the pieces are cut and named in order.
/02 Getting the grid right first time
Dimensions that do not divide evenly by your row and column counts leave uneven edge tiles, so crop or resize before splitting if the edges need to match. For a feed mural, remember the grid fills right to left as you post, so the upload order is the reverse of how it will appear.
Check the assembled result before posting anything — a mural is extremely hard to fix once part of it is published, since individual posts cannot be reordered.
/03 Splitting an image for an Instagram grid
The classic use for an image splitter is the profile grid post: one large picture spread across several posts that line up on your profile. Instagram shows profiles three posts wide, so split the image into 3 columns and as many rows as you want posts, in multiples of three.
Post the tiles in reverse order. Instagram puts your newest post at the top left, so the bottom-right tile goes first and the top-left tile goes last. Every tile is named by its row and column, which makes the sequence easy to follow.
Since 2025, Instagram profile thumbnails are portrait rather than square, cropping the centre of each post to a 3:4 shape. Keep faces, text and important details away from tile edges, where they are most likely to be cut or land on a seam between posts.
/04 Other jobs for a grid split
The same even grid solves several problems. Split a large poster into tiles to print it across ordinary A4 or Letter sheets and tape them together.
