About this technique

Adding colour noise at low opacity with overlay blend mode is a classic digital art trick. It adds subtle texture and colour variation that makes artwork feel more organic and cohesive, similar to the natural grain in traditional media.

About Artwork Enhancer

/01 Adding grain to kill banding

Flat gradients and large areas of subtle colour often show visible steps rather than a smooth transition — banding. A fine layer of colour noise breaks up those steps and restores the impression of a smooth blend.

The grain also adds texture to flat digital artwork, which can stop it looking sterile.

/02 Why banding happens and why noise fixes it

An 8-bit channel offers 256 levels. A gradient spread across a wide area may need more intermediate values than that, so the display is forced to jump between the nearest available levels and the jumps read as bands.

Adding noise dithers the boundary, scattering pixels either side of each step so the eye blends them instead of seeing a line. Keep it subtle — enough to break the edges, not enough to notice as grain. Bear in mind that heavy compression afterwards can smooth the noise away and bring the banding back, so apply it late and export at good quality.

/03 Add noise to image artwork for texture and smoother gradients

Flat digital artwork can look plasticky, and smooth gradients often show visible stripes called banding. Adding a fine layer of noise fixes both. Grain gives illustrations and posters a tactile, printed quality, and it breaks up the hard steps between shades so gradients look smooth again.

Drop your artwork in and adjust two controls. Noise opacity sets how strong the grain is; the classic designer trick uses around 2 percent, which is barely visible but enough to kill banding. Noise scale sets how fine or coarse each speck is, from a subtle film grain to a rougher, risograph-like texture. Compare against the original in the preview, then download the enhanced artwork.

/04 How much grain to use

Start low. At 2 to 5 percent opacity noise is felt more than seen, which is right for web gradients, UI backgrounds and photography. Around 8 to 15 percent reads as a deliberate stylistic grain for posters, album art and illustration. Much above that and the texture begins to dominate the image.

Keep the final destination in mind. JPEG compression smooths away very fine noise, so exports for social media may need slightly stronger or coarser grain than a PNG destined for print or the web.

FAQ

Questions about Artwork Enhancer.

What causes banding in gradients?
Not enough distinct colour values to cover the transition smoothly, so the image steps between the nearest available levels. Wide, subtle gradients are the most affected.
How much grain should I add?
As little as fixes the banding. If the texture is obvious, it is too strong — the goal is to disguise the steps, not to add a visible effect.
Will the grain survive compression?
Not always. Aggressive compression smooths fine noise away and the banding can return, so export at a good quality setting.
Why add noise to an image?
Noise hides colour banding in gradients and gives flat digital artwork a more natural, printed texture. A small amount makes images feel less synthetic without looking grainy.
What opacity should noise be?
Around 2 to 5 percent for subtle banding removal and texture, and 8 to 15 percent for a visible stylised grain. Check the result at 100 percent zoom before downloading.
Is grain the same as film grain?
Digital noise imitates film grain, the random speckle of silver particles in photographic film. Use a finer scale for a film look and a coarser scale for a print or risograph feel.
