About Palette Generator

/01 Generating a palette from a seed colour

Start with one colour and generate a full palette from it using different harmony strategies. Rather than picking swatches independently and hoping they agree, you derive the rest from a colour you have already committed to.

Regenerate until something works, then copy the values you want.

/02 Turning a palette into a usable scheme

A generated palette is raw material, not a finished design system. In practice most interfaces need one dominant colour, one or two supporting shades, a neutral range for text and surfaces, and a single accent reserved for the things that must be noticed.

The common mistake is using every colour equally, which leaves nothing to draw the eye. Restraint does more for a design than range — and every text and background pairing still needs checking for contrast before it ships.

/03 A color combination generator you can steer

Picking colours that work together is where most design projects stall. This color combination generator starts from a seed colour and builds a full palette using a strategy you choose, so every result has a reason behind it rather than being random.

Click a swatch to edit it, add or remove colours, and lock the ones you want to keep. Press Space to regenerate, and only the unlocked colours change, so you can keep refining one slot at a time until the whole combination feels right. Name the palette and export it, including as JSON for code, or send a colour straight to the Tailwind shade generator to expand it into a full scale.

Locking is the habit that makes generators useful. Start with your brand or hero colour locked, generate until a second colour works with it, lock that too, and continue.

/04 Colour combinations that work

A few combinations are dependable across websites, brands and interiors. Navy with warm neutrals such as cream or sand feels calm and trustworthy. Deep green with gold or mustard feels premium. Black, white and one saturated accent colour is almost impossible to get wrong. Terracotta, olive and off-white suits warm, natural brands.

Whatever you choose, give the colours unequal roles: one dominant, one supporting, and a small amount of accent. Then test real content in the palette, since a combination that looks lovely as five swatches can still produce unreadable text.

FAQ

Questions about Palette Generator.

How do the strategies differ?
Each applies a different rule for choosing hues relative to your seed — neighbouring hues for a unified feel, opposing hues for contrast, evenly spaced hues for balance. Try several against your actual content.
Can I lock a colour I like?
The generator works from your seed colour, so set that to the shade you want to keep and regenerate the rest around it.
Are generated palettes accessible?
Not automatically. Harmony rules govern hue relationships, not legibility — check every foreground and background pair against WCAG contrast before using it for text.
What is the best color combination for a website?
A neutral background, one brand colour for key actions, and a darker tone for text is the most reliable structure. Navy, teal or deep green with warm neutrals are popular, safe choices; check text contrast whichever you pick.
How do I keep a colour while generating new ones?
Lock it. Locked colours stay fixed when you regenerate, so you can keep your favourites and let the generator replace only the rest.
Which colours go well with blue?
Orange is its complementary colour for strong contrast. White, cream and warm grey keep blue calm, yellow adds energy, and deeper blues or teal make harmonious analogous schemes.
